This brass quintet was written to commemorate the experience of sipping on Tereré, a bitter Yerba Mate “iced tea” beverage traditionally consumed in Paraguay. It draws inspiration from southern [U.S.] hip-hop “Trap” rhythms and haunting Phrygian melodies to create a truly otherworldly listening experience. The piece offers a great study in syncopated and hemiola rhythm for the advancing chamber musician, and the integration of characteristic yet easily accessible microtonal ornaments will seamlessly transition a brass student with good fundamentals into a ready-to-gig contemporary musician. The work is highly listenable at all musical levels and is sure to receive a profound audience reaction! I hope you enjoy performing one of my most thought-provoking works.
